Christine & Owen {Boulder, CO}

Christine, Owen, and I met at one of my favorite locations in Boulder, Colorado for their engagement session: Bear Canyon Trail, the base of the Flatirons and where the Rocky Mountains begin. This place represents important stomping grounds for the three of us. Owen and I completed grad school at CU-Boulder, one of the most sought after places to mesh business with amazing geography. We’ve all trained for triathlons in the area… while some have done better than others (I’m a complete tri amateur compared to Christine and Owen). I met them through the recently engaged Ryan and Temple who inspire me not only with their focus on careers, but attainment of personal goals.

With 315 sunny days a year, Boulder is often affectionately referred to as 16 square miles surrounded by reality. It also happens to showcase an amazing location to photograph engagement sessions I love. wpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_01-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgEngagement Session in Boulder Colorado wpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_03-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_04-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_05-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_06-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_07-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_08-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_09-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_10-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_11-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_12-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_13-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_14-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_15-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_16-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_17-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_18-2013-06-12-00-00.jpgwpid-owen_christine_boulder_engagement_photos_19-2013-06-12-00-00.jpg

Photographer notes: I paired the PhaseOne medium format rig with the old school Mamiya 80mm f/1.9 lens for this shoot. I dig this an amazing combo featuring shallow depth of field (call it f/1.2 on DSLRs) and tack sharp optics paired w/ IQ 140 digital back, a stellar combination of gear old and new. Manually focusing with such narrow depth of field on medium format has demanded lots of practice with worthwhile results. My editing workflow continues to improve, thanks to the poise and polish Capture One Pro 7 delivers. I’m amazed the capabilities a medium format workflow provides in terms of overall image quality, unsurpassed detail, and a dynamic range which sits right next to film. I chose to not use flash or ND filter on any images despite intense sunny conditions, a testament for any Colorado photographer shooting with hard light.

If you’d like to geek out and learn more about a medium format digital workflow for a mentoring session, or just would love to be photographed and provided with a set images come from an unsurpassed system, contact me for availability.
